Tunnel Syndrome
Pathology
The carpal tunnel is a passageway in the wrist which allows the tendons of the wrist to run to through to the fingers and hand. The Median Nerve, which provides feeling and movement to the thumb side of the hand (the palm, thumb, index finger, middle finger, and thumb side of the ring finger) also, runs through this tunnel. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by increased pressure in the tunnel due to any swelling or inflammation, causing compression of the Median Nerve in the wrist.
The condition is characterized by burning pain with numbness or pins and needles and tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half of the ring finger. Other common symptoms include: weakness in one or both hands, weak grip, difficulty carrying objects and pain extending along the arm.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is common in people who perform repetitive movements or activities of the hand and wrist. This includes: office workers, sewing machinists, painters, writers and musicians.
Classification/Assessment

Treatment
Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may include: splinting, electrotherapy, stretches, activity modification and progressive strengthening exercises.
