My Health Record is the new name of the national digital health record system. Having a My Health Record means your important health information like allergies, medical conditions and treatments, medicine details, test or scan reports can be digitally stored in one place. You can also store information such as emergency contacts and their details, advance care planning information and other over-the-counter medicines and vitamins that you might be taking. Having all this information in one place means that Healthcare providers such as doctors, specialists and hospital staff may be able to securely view this information online anywhere at any time when they need to, like in an accident or an emergency. This enables them to provide you with the most efficient and effective treatment for your healthcare issues.
One of the greatest benefits of My Health Record is the convenience. It means that you won’t need to worry about having to remember and repeat your health history like medicines, details of chronic conditions, and dates of recent tests or new healthcare providers. The same goes for your children’s health history like immunisations and medical tests. This is great for people who travel regularly and may need to access health services in other locations or interstate and for busy families.
There are strict rules and regulations on who can see or use your My Health Record to protect your information from misuse or loss. You can choose to control who sees what information in your My Health Record.
If you would like to register for My Health Record then there are two ways to do this. The first option is to speak to one of our friendly receptionists who will get you to fill out a form. Alternatively, you can register yourself by logging onto www.myhealthrecord.gov.au. If you need help with this process then please ask one of our receptionists for a My Health Record brochure which will provide you with step by step instructions on how to register.
Once registered with My Health Record, you will need a long consultation with your treating General Practitioner who will upload your medical history. Appointments can be requested at reception.
