The Gift of Being Fully Present Within Ourselves
Have you ever driven home and realised you don’t remember the journey? Or found yourself in a conversation but felt mentally elsewhere? Modern life is fast-paced and demanding. We work long hours, care for our families, stay connected with friends, study, pursue hobbies, play sports, and spend increasing amounts of time on our phones and computers. Every day, we’re flooded with information—about ourselves, others, and the world around us.
To cope, our brains filter out much of this input. But sometimes, it feels like we’re not truly present. We operate on autopilot. We feel distracted. We forget things our partners tell us. We fixate on worries and struggle to focus on anything else.
What Is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully engaged in the present moment—with curiosity, openness, and acceptance. Rather than avoiding or blocking out thoughts and feelings, mindfulness invites us to notice them. It’s about tuning into our senses and acknowledging what’s happening inside and around us, without judgment.
Eastern cultures have embraced mindfulness for centuries. In the West, its benefits are now being recognised and studied more widely. Research shows that mindfulness can slow brain activity and lead to:
- Better focus
- Less anxiety
- Improved memory
- Greater calm
- Emotional stability
Mindfulness in Clinical Practice
Evidence continues to grow around the effectiveness of mindfulness in treating a range of clinical issues, including:
- Chronic pain
- Anxiety and depression
- Post-traumatic stress
- Relationship conflict
Simple Ways to Practice Mindfulness Daily
You don’t need hours of meditation to benefit from mindfulness. Small, intentional acts can make a big difference:
🚶 Go for a walk Notice the swing of your arms, the pressure of your feet on the pavement, the sound of birds, and the warmth of sunlight on your face.
🧘 Sit quietly Take five deep breaths. Feel the cool air entering your nostrils and the warmth as you exhale. Let your attention rest on the rhythm of your breath.
🍽️ Eat mindfully Turn off the TV and put away your phone. Approach your meal with curiosity. What does it look like? Smell it. Chew slowly. Notice the texture and taste. Savour each bite.
Being present is a gift we can give ourselves—one moment at a time.
