Heart health checks save lives. If you are 45 years or older (30 years or older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) and have not had a heart attack or stroke, then you are eligible for a Heart Health Check with your GP. From the 1st of November this type of appointment is fully funded by Medicare, with no out of pocket expense to you, the patient.
Are you at risk?
Risk Factors for heart attack or stroke:
Some risk factors you can’t change, such as age, gender, ethnic background and family history but there are risk factors you can change such as:
- Smoking status
- Cholesterol levels
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Physical Activity
- Weight
- Diet
- Depression & social isolation
A visit to your Pro Health Care GP for a Heart health check will include a discussion of all the above risk factors. Your GP will then arrange all the necessary tests to assess your risk of having a heart attack
or stroke. Depending on your results, your doctor will implement a management plan, appropriate treatment, advise lifestyle changes and prescribe medications if necessary.
If you or a loved one would like to have a Heart Health check, please phone your local Pro Health Care and make a long appointment with your GP.
