Resistance Training in Adelaide

What is Weight Resistance Training?

Resistance training, also called weight training or strength training, involves working your muscles against a resistance. A well-rounded exercise program prescribed by our Exercise Physiologist at Pro Exercise will include resistance training.

Why is resistance training important?

Helps to develop strong bones: Resistance training increases bone density and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.

Weight Control: As you gain muscle, your body burns energy more efficiently.

Builds muscle: To protect your joints from injury. It also helps you maintain flexibility and balance and helps you remain independent as you age.

Improves your sense of wellbeing: Resistance training can boost your self-confidence, improve your body image and reduce the risk of depression.

Helps to get a better night’s sleep: People who regularly take part in a strength training program are less likely to have insomnia.

To manage chronic conditions: Resistance training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions including arthritis, back pain, depression, diabetes and obesity.

Recommendations for healthy adults are to perform 8 to 10 resistance-training exercises, with 8 to 12 repetitions of each exercise, twice a week. Exercises prescribed will generally work through all the major muscle groups of your body (legs, hips, back, chest, abdomen, shoulders, and arms).
