The Importance of Skin Checks

While there is no national screening program for skin cancer, skin checks are an important source of early detection.  Australia experiences some of the highest levels of ultra-violet radiation in the world, primarily because we are close to the equator and have weather conditions that permit many blue-sky days. It is therefore no surprise that skin cancer (combined melanoma and non-melanoma) is the most common type of cancer in Australia. Skin cancer causes more Australian deaths than transport accidents, and every year Australian GPs conduct over a million patient consultations for skin cancer.

What to Expect During Your Consult

A skin check at our dedicated skin cancer clinic is generally completed in a fifteen-minute session and is a simple, full body check for skin cancer.  Doctors have on-site, specialised equipment that they use for skin checks and are equipped to undertake photographs for monitoring, biopsies, excisions, and use of cryotherapy or diathermy if required.  The majority of skin cancers are able to be handled by us but we may refer to a specialist for their input if the case is complex or at the patients request.

Dr Jonathan Mott-Lake is an Adelaide trained General Practitioner consulting from our Beverley clinic with special interests in skin cancer medicine and skin cancer excisions and procedures.

Dr Jonathan Mott-Lake is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) with a special interest in skin cancer medicine.

He developed a passion for the diagnosis and management of skin cancers during his GP training and has been continuously upskilling in this area ever since.

Jonathan strives to help patients feel comfortable and supported through all aspects of their skin checks and skin cancer management and to provide his patients with evidence based high-quality skin cancer care tailored to their individual needs.

He is currently completing a master’s degree in Skin Cancer from The University of Queensland, which is recognized as the top educational qualification in the field of skin cancer detection and treatment.

  • Currently completing a master’s degree in Skin Cancer (University of Queensland)
  • Advanced Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine (HealthCert Education)
  • Professional Certificate of Skin Cancer Surgery Principles (HealthCert Education)
  • Certificate of Practical Dermoscopy  (Australasian College of Dermatologists)

Outside of work, Jonathan enjoys spending time with family and friends, keeping fit, listening to music, cooking, travelling and reading.
