Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a therapeutic device primarily used in Physiotherapy and Podiatry, to treat various musculoskeletal conditions. ESWT applies a high-intensity sound waves to treat pain and promote healing in the foot. These sound waves increase blood flow and help your body repair the injured tissue.

What are the possible benefits of ESWT?

  • Pain relief through dispersion of pain mediator “Substance P”
  • Reversal of chronic inflammation
  • Stimulation of collagen production
  • Dissolution of calcified fibroblasts
  • New blood vessel formation
  • Release of trigger points

What conditions can ESWT be used for?

ESWT has been shown to be most beneficial for chronic (ie. >6 weeks) and calcific tendinopathies, such as any of the following:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Patella tendinopathy
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathies and calcific tendonitis
  • Tennis/golfer’s elbow

What does ESWT involve?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) involves the practitioner applying gel to your skin and moves a handheld device over the area causing pain. The device sends sound waves through the skin to the injured tissue. Each session usually lasts about 15-20 minutes, and you may need a few sessions over several weeks.
