Pre-Season Massage

Withy many sport pre-seasons coming up in the next month it is important to keep ourselves in shape and to look after our bodies. Massage plays a major role in sports performance and rehabilitation. Sports and remedial massage will assist in maintaining optimal muscle status even when the body is in generally good condition. It also aids in preventing injuries and will assist in recovery to an injured muscle.

One of the main techniques to massage is the stroking movement towards the heart. This technique draws fluid through the blood and lymph vessels. Additionally by increasing the pressure of the stroke a vacuum is created, this is particularly important when muscle tissues are damaged or tight, as a tight muscle will squeeze blood out like a sponge which deprives the tissues of nutrients. Deep tissue massage causes the pores in tissue membranes to open, which enables the fluids and nutrients to pass through. This will assist in the removal of waste products such as lactic acid and will promote the muscles to draw upon oxygen and nutrients that aid recovery.

Pre-season is generally made up of strenuous aerobic training that will affect muscles and can make tissues hard and inelastic. Massage will assist in stretching the tissues to promote greater elasticity and therefore prevent injury.

Good luck with the upcoming pre-season and be sure to look after your body and book in for a massage at any of our Pro Health Care Centres.
