Changes to the My Aged Care System

On the 1st of July The Australian government implemented changes to The Commonwealth Aged Care Reforms in response to the growing population of older people and the challenges facing the current aged care system. The Australian Government have established My Aged Care, which replaced the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) that was previously in place. My Aged Care is comprised of a contact centre and a website, which aims to give easier access to a full range of aged care services and provide information for yourself or for someone that you care for.

My Aged Care can provide a variety of aged care services, including:

  • At home care
  • Care in an aged care home
  • After-hospital care (Transition care)
  • Respite care

New and current clients are required to register with My Aged Care for an initial screening and assessment to determine their eligibility and be referred onto the appropriate services. Clients can do their own applications directly through My Aged Care and do not require a consult with their GP.

For further information visit the My Aged Care website at http://www.myagedcare.gov.au/ or call the contact centre on 1800 200 422 and speak to one of their staff members.
