What are Hamstring Injuries?

The hamstrings are a group of muscles at the back of the thigh which help bend the knee and extend (straighten) the hip. They are susceptible to tears and strains.

Hamstring injuries are most common in sports which require a high degree of speed, power and agility such as AFL, basketball, soccer and tennis. Symptoms are usually felt in the back of the thigh and may come on following a kick, or during a run or sprint.

How are Hamstring Injuries Assessed?

Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapists can thoroughly assess and diagnose the extent of the injury and provide appropriate advice regarding management of your hamstring injury. Sports Physiotherapists are also highly trained in biomechanical analysis and identifying the contributing factors to prevent re-injury. At Pro Physio SA, our sports physiotherapists will examine your leg to determine the type, extent and causes of your injury/condition and if necessary will arrange appropriate investigation (eg MRI / Ultrasound) to assist in the assessment of the injury.

What Physio Treatment is required for Hamstring Injuries?

Immediate management of any soft tissue injury is to RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) for the initial 48-72 hours to reduce the bleeding and damage.

The treatment and rehabilitation program put in place are all aimed at getting you back to your sport as soon as possible. Our team of Sports Physiotherapists are able to provide timeframes for your rehabilitation and return to sport that will vary depending upon the nature and severity of the strain.
