What is a Pap Smear?
A Pap Smear test is used to check changes in a woman’s cervix (the neck of the womb) at the top of the vagina.
What do Pap Smear tests detect?
It is a screening tool that can very effectively detect warning signs for the presence of cancer within the cervix.
How often do I need a Pap Smear?
All women over the age of 18 and who are sexually active are recommended to have a Pap Smear every two years, even if they no longer have sex. Our Doctors maintain a recall list for Pap Smears. Once you have attended for a Pap Smear, you will be placed on a 2 year recall to ensure that the test is undertaken within best practice guidelines for the prevention of Cervical Cancer. It is therefore important that patients advise our clinic of any change in contact details.
At Pro Medical SA, our Doctors appreciate that this test is associated with some discomfort. In light of this, we have Female Doctors and Practice Nurses that are able to perform this screening test should this be preferred.
